Performance Analysis of Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Opportunistic Communications

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are a promising technology for enhancing coverage and spectral efficiency, both in the sub-6 GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) bands. Existing approaches to leverage benefits of IRS involve use resource-intensive channel estimation step followed by computationally expensive algorithm optimize reflection coefficients at IRS. In this work, focusing on band communications, we present analyze several alternative schemes, where phase configuration is randomized multi-user diversity exploited opportunistically select best user each point time data transmission. We show that throughput an assisted opportunistic communication (OC) system asymptotically converges optimal beamforming-based under fair allocation resources, as number users gets large. also introduce schemes enhance rate convergence OC beamforming with users. For all proposed derive scaling law terms parameters, Following this, extend setup wideband channels via orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) discuss two setting clearly elucidate superior performance aided systems can offer over conventional systems, very low implementation cost complexity.
